A Dusty New Concept
Alright, so two days ago I began working on a new novel that will be the first in a trilogy (called “The Dust Trilogy”). The novel is currently titled Kingdom of Dust and it follows 16 year old Matthew Turner and his father, Barrett, as they venture into a world of their own creation. Let me explain:
Barrett is a writer, though he calls himself a Yarnspinner, but none of his books have ever been published. However, he has dreamed up a world that will give him one final chance, the Dust Realm. At the beginning of the novel, Matt finds his father at work in the library on the upper level of their townhouse, which is located in a small town outside London. Matt takes the first pages of his father’s new story and, after pouring over them, creates drawings of different places within the Kingdom of Dust. He even uses the ink which his father is using to write the book. This is no ordinary ink, though: This ink seems to sparkle, as though it had crystals embedded in it.
One night, when Barrett is taking a break from writing, he and Matt read over a few pages. It is Matt, though, who reads one of the passages aloud at his father’s request. Before they can escape, a golden vortex of magic and letters erupts from the pages and takes Barrett and Matt into a world they could only dream of, their own. Now, they must try to find a way out of the Realm while helping the Magistrinium find out why the Firedancers (tyrannical benders of fire who were banished from the Kingdom) need the Dust that keeps the Kingdom from falling into darkness. This only means one thing: Barrett and Matt must live through the story to know how it ends.

The whole concept is still a little shaky, but I think as I get into the first book a little more, I’ll be able to really hammer it all out and figure out the whole logic of this system. I’m really having fun working on this, I am very pleased with how well the first chapter is turning out. Anyway, I just wanted to get a post out, since I haven’t done that much lately. I may post some more at the end of the day, but for now, I think that about wraps it up!
